Polymarket is a privately held company founded in June 2020 by Shayne Coplan, who is still its CEO. Its biggest outside backer is Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, which committed up to $2 billion in October 2025 at a valuation around $8–9 billion. The US app is run by a separate regulated subsidiary, QCX LLC. There is no Polymarket stock.
The founder
Shayne Coplan started Polymarket in New York in 2020, building on an academic idea (prediction markets aggregate information) and a practical one (crypto rails let you launch globally without a bank). He ran it through the 2022 CFTC settlement, the 2024 election boom that made it a household name, and the 2025 negotiations that brought it back to the US. He remains founder and CEO.
The investors
- Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). In October 2025 ICE committed up to $2 billion, the deal that valued the company at roughly $8 billion and gave Wall Street's biggest exchange operator a stake in the biggest prediction market. ICE also distributes Polymarket data to institutions.
- Venture investors from earlier rounds, including crypto-focused funds.
- 1789 Capital, the firm linked to Donald Trump Jr., invested in 2025 when he became an advisor.
By February 2026 reporting put the valuation at about $9 billion.

The split matters for you as a user: which company you're dealing with, which rules apply and which regulator you can complain to depend on which product you use.
Can you invest in Polymarket?
Not directly. Private shares are held by the founder, employees and funds. For public exposure, ICE is the listed company with a disclosed stake. Treat any "Polymarket token" or "Polymarket stock" offer as a scam unless the company announces otherwise; as of October 2026 it hasn't.
